Why won't other hispanics speak to me in Spanish?

You might be fluent, but if they hear you talk with a bit of a foreigner's accent, and they'll realize that Spanish is not your first language, most Hispanics will just automatically try to speak to you in English even if they are not fluent in English themselves. If it's someone you don't know, the best strategy is to check it out first. For instance you can ask them "do you speak Spanish", if they say "yes", you can say that "you too, can speak Spanish". If that all goes well, you can ask them what language they would prefer to speak. I have found that most of the time the answer will be "prefiero español". read more

Other time, I confused an Indian woman as Mexican - she looked at me weird and said she didn't speak Spanish (I think this happened because of the color of her skin). I felt embarrassed.
