Also, the governorship is not really a great indicator of whether a state is "red" or "blue". People are generally sophisticated enough to separate national issues from local issues, which is why you see liberal states like California, New York and Massachusetts (and Illinois in the past) vote for Republican governors with a fair amount of regularity. read more
