Governments have been criticized for banning games for many reasons, including, but not limited to; bans that increase piracy, inhibit business opportunities, violate rights, and are widely available for purchase or download. This list is not exhaustive in total, nor is it exhaustive for any country mentioned in particular.

In 1994, Mortal Kombat II was added to the index of works deemed harmful to young people by Germany's Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien, or BPjM).

The Game Rating Board requires that all video games be rated by the organization. Unrated titles are de facto banned from being sold in the country, and websites selling them can be blocked.

Carmageddon is a vehicular combat video game released for personal computers in 1997. It was later ported to other platforms, and spawned a series of follow-up titles. The game was produced by Stainless Games and published by Interplay Productions and Sales Curve Interactive.
