Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V

These games take a long time to get through, so you should probably start with the good ones first. Or... you might just be arguing with friends. That's the beauty of these things. With a series like Grand Theft Auto, every game has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, and exploring just what ticks people's boxes can be a blast.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

When The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time burst onto our consoles back in 1998, few would have predicted it would be largely considered the greatest game of all time. Yet now, just over 15 years on, the game - and its hero Link - remain firmly in our hearts.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I don't have much more to say about Skyrim, considering that I've written approximately 5,000 articles about it in my time here at Kotaku.I'm not sure I've ever seen a game become an EVENT in quite the way Skyrim did—for months on end, it was so much fun simply to get caught up in the thrill of it all.

Half-Life
Half-Life

While its sequel, Half-Life 2, is arguably a more impressive game in terms of the world that game creates, the original Half-Life had an undeniable impact on the first-person shooter genre. It's definitely one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time.

Minecraft
Minecraft

Okay, so Minecraft was already kinda-sorta the second-bestselling game of all time if you don’t count Wii Sports, which was a pack-in, and I’m loathe to count stuff you can’t buy standalone.

Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption

Marston can hunt animals, for example, and Red Dead radically overhauled GTA 4’s clunky third-person cover shooting. With the Dead Eye command, you can slow down time and line up shots, which Marston will then reel off in quick succession.

God of War
God of War

The God of War series is the best thing to happen to Greek Mythology since Jason and the Argonauts, each instalment reviving the legends with stunning visuals, epic storylines, and some of the greatest boss battles ever conceived.

Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4

Following Resident Evil 4 was never going to be easy, and we would argue that Resident Evil 5 waited too long to capitalise on the goodwill generated by its beloved predecessor. On the one hand, waiting to launch on the PS3 and Xbox 360 meant that the series had never looked better, but on the flip side, following superior third-person games like Gears of War made some elements feel a little dated.

BioShock Infinite
BioShock Infinite

Not far behind were the 40% who chose Bioshock Infinite as their favorite, while only 12% thought Bioshock 2 was the best in the series. Many of the reasons cited by those who voted for the original Bioshock involve story, setting, gameplay, horror, and above all, the atmosphere.

DOOM
DOOM

The Greatest Games of All Time: Doom It wouldn't be fair to say Doom was the first first-person shooter, but it can be said that it's inarguably the most important. Without this seminal game from id Software, the shooter genre--heck, all of gaming--simply wouldn't be what it is today.

Tetris
Tetris

The Tetris TGM DS homebrew is perfect to all 3 versions of ARS gameplay, contains a bunch of ridiculous features and customization, and has surprisingly commercial-like polish to it. It's my personal favorite and if it wasn't shut down and multiplayer was added it'd the best Tetris game unquestionably.

As I said in my entry for Dark Souls in our 2015 top 100 games of all time feature, From Software’s creation represents everything that is important to video games in the modern era, from polished, core gameplay mechanics, to player agency, to narrative involvement, to world design, to the many, many emotional peaks and troughs of an expertly paced, but organically delivered journey.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

This game could have been a fine adventure movie as well. The entire game is just a thrill ride from start to finish, with things happening around every corner. Uncharted gameplay is not exactly my type of gameplay and that did affect my enjoyment of Uncharted 1 (which I did enjoy most of the time, but not greatly), but not this one.

Fallout 3
Fallout 3

Experiencing vault life first-hand in the introduction is one of the best openings in a game, ever. The Capital Wasteland is a great setting, especially for a game all about America. And the experience of actually walking through Fallout 3 in its full, open-world glory, is a joy.

Call of Duty
Call of Duty

Call of duty 4 is by far the best call of duty of all time. It was one of my first call of duties and I absolutely loved it. The campaign is full of suspense unlike mw2. For a game that came out in 2007 it is truly AMAZING there is not much difference in graphics between the new one and this one so I think that infinity ward did a outstanding job.

Grand Theft Auto IV

"Super Mario World" is still, to this day, the very best "Super Mario" game ever made. That statement includes all the 3D games, the spin-off series, and whatever other game you want to dig up with the famous mustachioed plumber. "Super Mario World" is the series' first open-world game (of sorts), and it is absolutely gigantic.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

1. Vice City. It may not be the perfect Grand Theft Auto game, but it's the perfect Grand Theft Auto experience. Sure, on a superficial level it's the car chases and gunplay that make a GTA game fun, but it's the strength of the world that helps set these games apart from each other. And no world was better realised than Rockstar's take on 1986 Miami.
