In 1553, the Archbishop of St Andrews administered confirmation, at last allowing the community to play golf over the links. The Society of St Andrews Golfers was formed in 1754 and ten years later the course was reduced from its original 22 holes to 18.
The Birkdale (as Royal Birkdale Golf Club was originally called) was a nine-hole golf course located at Shaw Hills and it opened for play in October 1889. In 1894, the committee decided to extend the course to 18-holes and move it to its current home at Birkdale Hills. Designed by George Lowe, the course was ready in 1897.

Whistling Straits is a walking course only. I played it with one of the top-ranking amateurs in Wisconsin. The caddies were helpful even though the course had only been open for a few months, and watching my partner negotiate that course from the tips was a thing of beauty. I had a tough day in the trees.
