In the chart below, the "most reliable" cars are rated above average or higher. In the "least reliable" column, all cars are worse than average or lower. The least reliable car is listed first, the Subaru BRZ.

Nine cars were awarded with top honors in dependability in this year’s study. See which car was named most reliable in each category, as well as how J.D. Power rated them for overall quality, performance and design.

Among the largest models in its market segment, the RAV4 is also one of the most dependable over time, according to J.D. Power predicted reliability data. The 2016 RAV4 receives an overall predicted reliability Power Circle Rating of 4 out of 5.

Based on our 2017 Annual Auto Survey, these models are the 10 most reliable cars today. We predict that these cars will give owners fewer problems than their competitors, based on data collected on 640,000 vehicles.

Purchasing a car is a long-term investment, with the expectation that the car will provide dependable transportation for the long haul. But as our surveys show, not all cars can fulfill that promise. Based on our 2017 Annual Auto Survey, these models are the 10 most reliable cars today.

In terms of specific makes and models, CarMD judged the 2015 Toyota Corolla to be the most reliable on the market. Other top-five winners included the 2013 Lexus ES, 2014 Toyota Prius, 2013 Toyota Avalon, and 2013 Honda Fit. It wasn't all good news for Toyota, though: of the top 100 cars, the least reliable was found to be the 2013 Toyota Prius C.

Honda Models. Honda Accord The Honda Accord is often rated as the most reliable (or certainly one of the most reliable) used car on a year after year basis. Known for the dependability and reliability of its engine, the Honda Accord has been one of the best selling family sized vehicles in America for the last 15 years or so. The Honda Accord also has one of the highest used car resale values of any car.

Subcompact cars tend to get great fuel economy, and they can provide excellent cargo space if you opt for a hatchback. Small, light cars also tend to handle better around corners. Many of the cars in this class deliver a sporty driving experience, according to critics, especially when equipped with an upgraded engine and suspension.

Midsize car: Toyota Camry Toyota. The Camry, long the best-selling car in the U.S., also is a perennial reliability winner. Consumer Reports' experts say they believe the Toyota brand overall scores well on reliability because the company is very deliberate in introducing new technology once it has been thoroughly tested.

In addition, the car or SUV had to have a strong reliability record in Consumer Reports' annual auto issue. Both rankings involve surveys of people who own a specific vehicle and so reflect real-world experience. While our list is heavy with Japanese and Korean brands, Buick does get two vehicles on the list.

Compact: Honda Civic Honda/Wieck. A top seller among small cars, the Civic has a comfortable ride, a smooth transmission and is rated for 28 MPG in city driving and 36 on the highway. Test drivers also like its responsive handling. Inside, cabin materials project a cheerful and upscale feeling. Seating is roomy and comfortable, front and back. The Civic comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. List price on the Civic ranges from $18,290 to $29,390.

Midsize SUV: Buick Enclave Buick. For families needing three rows of seats, Enclave offers good value in this high-priced category with list prices ranging from $39,050 to $49,305. With seating for up to eight, some reviewers cite Enclave as an especially good example of Buick's transformation to a modern line of vehicles.

Luxury car: Mercedes-Benz E-Class Mercedes-Benz/Wieck. Within the E-Class designation, Mercedes offers sedans and coupes, convertibles and wagons.
