Argentine is a Bahia "selection" of Bahiagrass that originated from the country of Argentina in South America. The variety was developed by University initially for its forage production qualities. This vareity is also sometimes referred to as "Argentina" Bahia.
A naturally deep root system makes Bahiagrass very drought tolerant, even in sandy soils common to the Southeast. Its natural texture is coarser than many regional grasses, particularly cool-season grasses common in northern zones.
Pensacola Bahiagrass is grown and planted on more acres than any of the other varieties of Bahia. It has been established on several million acres of roads, lawns, pasture, forage and conservation lands in the Southern states of USA since it's discovery in 1935 by Ed Finlayson of the Escambia County Extension Service.
