All-mountain mountain bikes, also known as trail bikes, are the workhorse category of mountain bikes. Dirt Jump bikes are usually quite strong with 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm) of front suspension, and rarely any rear suspension (3 to 4 inches, 76 to 100 mm, if any), with as many as nine gears or as few as one.
Downhill bikes are sturdy and have full suspension with extra travel, making them especially adept at conquering rough terrain at high speeds. Most traditional mountain bikes have little use for the extreme absorption and slacker geometry of a downhill bike, since downhill bikes are usually much heavier than a traditional mountain bike.
Freeride frames can also be lighter (where weight is an important consideration) than downhill frames, with these bikes being designated freeride lite and may come equipped with the new, oversized "onepointfive"(inch) head tube standard, in order to cater for increasing demand for stronger, long-travel(150–200 mm), single crown forks.
