Types of Bipolar Medication

Abilify (aripiprazole is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. Abilify is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder (manic depression).

Clozaril has FDA indications for schizophrenia, treatment-resistant schizophrenia, suicidal behavior in schizophrenia, and suicidal behavior in schizoaffective disorder. It does not have FDA indications for any phases of bipolar disorder. There are a number of clinical studies, however, that have found Clozaril to be effective in bipolar mania.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) is an antipsychotic medication that affects chemicals in the brain. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.

Seroquel is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old. Seroquel is used to treat bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old. Seroquel is also used together with antidepressant medications to treat major depressive disorder in adults.

Risperdal is an atypical anti-psychotic used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder in teenagers and adults. Risperdal is an atypical anti-psychotic used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder in teenagers and adults.

Geodon (ziprasidone) is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Geodon is used to treat schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
