An air-cushioned landing craft, also called an LCAC (landing craft, air cushioned) is a modern variation on the amphibious landing boat. The majority of these craft are small- to mid-sized multi-purpose hovercraft, also known as "over the beach" ("OTB") craft.
One way to appreciate the introduction of the term is to compare the "normal" heavy cruisers of the Admiral Hipper class with the panzerschiffs of the Deutschland class, and there you can see how the "pocket battleship" differs from their regular cousins from within the same navy and built in the same period.
