Avoid washing baby dreadlocks during the first 3 to 4 weeks to keep them from unraveling from the water. After the first month, take the opportunity to gently wash your hair and retwist dreads when they're damp, when they will dread up most readily.

Move the comb up about 2 inches and repeat. As you backcomb, rotate the hair you are holding from side to side to help create a circular shape as the dreadlock forms.
