18g or 20g is the standard for ear piercings. I think 20g is the size they use in the piercing guns. I would use 18g. Unless you planned on gauging your ears, then I'd say a 16g or even a 14g to start out with. But if it's just for a regular ear piercing, go with the 18g.

I have 13 piercings total. 2 from when i was a small child that I no longer use, 3 lobe piercings, a semi or half snug, a cartilage piercing, a helix piercing, a nostril piercing, and a top belly button piercing.
