They permit discovery of new diseases and un-expected effects (adverse or beneficial) as well as the study of mechanisms, and they play an important role in medical educa-tion.
A case-control study is designed to help determine if an exposure is associated with an outcome (i.e., disease or condition of interest). In theory, the case-control study can be described simply. First, identify the cases (a group known to have the outcome) and the controls (a group known to be free of the outcome).
Prospective vs. Retrospective Studies Prospective A prospective study watches for outcomes, such as the development of a disease, during the study period and relates this to other factors such as suspected risk or protection factor(s).
