What are HID grow lights? High Intensity Discharge (HID) grow lights provide a cost-efficient light source for the growing and cultivation of hydroponic marijuana. HID grow lights are considerably cheaper than LED lights, and whilst less effective overall, still represent a tried and tested option for many growers.
The high intensity of light produced by these lights makes them the closest artificial light to natural sunlight. High intensity is important to indoor gardening because the higher the intensity, the taller the plant you can successfully grow. The drawback of this type of lighting is that it produces a higher level of heat and therefore can create a heat problem which must be dealt with. For open areas with one lamp, the heat would not build up and would not cause any concern.
For high-light plants like tomatoes you will want to achieve around 40 watts per square foot for optimal growth and fruit production. For low light plants, and small leafy plants like herbs and lettuce, you will only need to achieve about 25 to 30 watts per square foot.
The brightest grow lights are high-intensity discharge (HID) lights. They can be installed anywhere in your home, garage, or greenhouse to supplement existing light, and they can serve as the sole source of light for your plants.

For insurance, I plant two seeds per cell (or pot). If both seeds germinate, I snip one and let the other grow.
HID grow lights are considerably cheaper than LED lights, and whilst less effective overall, still represent a tried and tested option for many growers. Two types of HID grow lights can be used for indoor marijuana growing – High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and Metal Halide (MH).
