Asagi koi that have more red pigmentation than usual are called Hi Asagi. Another variation on the typical Asagi koi is called Taki Asagi. These koi look just like your typical Asagi, but they have an additional line of white scales between its red and blue pigmentation. Red eyes are also desired in Asagi koi.
Both theories are hard to disprove; all Koi originate from Magoi, and it's not difficult to view a Shiro Utsuri as a "defective" Showa without the hi, just as a Shiro Bekko is basically a Sanke lacking a third color.
Ki Utsuri, a member of the Utsurimono family, are koi with a black body and areas of yellow pattern overlaying the black. The gene responsible for Ki Utsuri is a recessive gene. This means that Ki Utsuri are a random “throw” from a Shiro Utsuri or Hi Utsuri spawn, and can never be produced in large quantities. For this reason, very few Ki Utsuri are seen in the koi industry, and even fewer ...

Kohaku are white Koi with hi markings that should be of an even intensity of color. The color of a Koi can be improved and stabilized over the years by color feeding and constant attention to water quality.
Kohaku can be further described depending on the patterning of their hi. "Stepped" patterns are recognized by consecutive "islands" of hi on the Koi's head and body. A Kohaku brandishing 2 "steps" is called nidan, literally meaning two-stepped in Japanese. Sandan and yondan are the respective terms for three and four step patterns.
While this may be true to some, Shiro Utsuri is the other two-color koi that many koi keepers are starting to place in their top lists. Grand Champions traditionally have been selected from the Gosanke class – Kohaku, Sanke and Showa; now Shiro Utsuri are strong contenders for this prestigest award.

When selecting a Tancho Sanke or Tancho Showa, one must keep in mind that the Sumi (black) is likely to be undeveloped and therefor indistinct in a younger koi, but needs to be deep and strong in a mature koi.
