Types of Lathe

In turret lathe the turret can be moved through out the length. but in capstan lathe the turret movement is short. turret lathe is heavier compared to the capstan lathe. Turret lathe is used for heavy and medium work,whereas capstan lathe is suitable for small to heavy works.

Gang tool lathes are often setup for collet work, but you can run your 3" part in a step collet. A threaded 5C nose is nice as you can run the Hardinge step collets with the large diameter closer, forget the technical name for that setup.

Any lathe that is in a tool room is a tool room lathe. If in the main shop it is a engine lathe.At least that is what they will tell you in my part of the world.

The name, “Knee type milling machine” is because of the fact that the work table is supported on a knee-like casting which can slide in a vertical direction along the column to which it is rigidly clamped to in a position where the milling head and milling machine spindle are properly adjusted for operation.
