The distinction between the categories of a Top Grain leather and Full Grain leather are important. Top Grain leather refers to the process of sanding away the natural grain from the top surface of the leather. Imitation grain gets stamped into the leather to give a more uniform look, but no genuine grain remains.

Nubuck leather is made from the exterior or grain side of the animal hide, making it tough and durable leather. Because of its resistance to wear and tear, nubuck is often used for making shoes. Nubuck leather scratches easily but will not remain stained from water.

Top Grain Leather is generally used in the areas that receive more wear since the fiber of top grain is more compact than that of split grain. The most confusing term used within the leather industry is the term ' Top Grain Leather'. The word ' top' indicates the 'top' portion of a hide, not the quality of the leather.

It is not as processed as some other forms of leather, however. Top-grain leather is soft and shows natural character. A slightly lower quality top-grain leather is called corrected leather, which may be chemically treated or textured for a more uniform appearance. Corrected leather is durable but not as soft as standard top-grain leather.
