Types of Litchi

The litchi virus (found in the litchi fruit), has recently caused the death of eight children in the Malda district in West Bengal. The virus, it is reported, causes a grave condition called encephalopathy which leads to high grade fever, vomiting and convulsions.

The variety of litchi Fay Zee Siu has been one of the selected in the Canary Islands for being a variety of high quality taste and good production, heart-shaped and large, this variety is usually free of seed.

LYCHEE. Cultivar. Kaimana. Litchi chinensis Sonn. Sapindaceae. The lychee tree is handsome, dense, round-topped and slow-growing with smooth, gray, brittle trunk and limbs. Under ideal conditions they may reach 40 feet high, but they are usually much smaller.

This is a variety of Thailand that is an exquisite and exotic taste different from other varieties. The fruit is large and red but with a small seed.

Haus souey tung is very similar to haak yip rather than kaimana which is also grown here but it is earlier than either.Those pictured are the first of the season so a bit smaller than expected but they have variation in coloring.There is a slight shape difference from haak yip but all else is close.

A great eating lychee developed in Australia with a small to medium seed. Available from late November to February, they have a red skin with a slight orange hue and tend to be more round.
