The Andros Barrier Reef, measuring 190 miles long, is the world's third-largest fringing barrier reef (the third largest living organism on the planet). It runs parallel to the eastern coast of Andros, drops about eight feet on the inland side and 6,000 feet into the Tongue of the Ocean.
Red Sea coral reefs are particularly well developed in the north and central portions (off the coasts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan), with large sizable offshore reef complexes containing small islands, fringing reefs, and a variety of reef-associated habitats (see photo, above).
