Types of River Fish

Sturgeon is the common name for the 27 species of fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. Their evolution dates back to the Triassic some 245 to 208 million years ago. The family is grouped into four genera: Acipenser, Huso, Scaphirhynchus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus.

Acipenser oxyrinchus is a species with two subspecies: Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus Mitchill 1815. Gulf sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi Vladykov 1955. Their main diet includes crustaceans, worms, and mollusks. This species is also known to migrate up the river when it is spawning.

The Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii) is a species of fish in the family Acipenseridae.It is native to the Adriatic Sea and large rivers in Albania, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia.

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is a facultative catadromous fish found on the eastern coast of North America. Eels (Anguilla spp.) are fish belonging to the elopomorph superorder, a group of phylogenetically ancient teleosts.

Anguilla bengalensis (non Gray, 1831) The mottled eel (Anguilla bengalensis), also known as the African mottled eel, the Indian longfin eel, the Indian mottled eel, the long-finned eel or the river eel, is a demersal, catadromous eel in the family Anguillidae.

The bastard sturgeon, fringebarbel sturgeon, ship sturgeon, spiny sturgeon, or thorn sturgeon (Acipenser nudiventris) is a species of fish in the Acipenseridae family. Formerly abundant in the Black, Aral and Caspian seas, its range is now primarily limited to the Ural River (in Russia and Kazakhstan), with a possible relict populations in the Rioni River in Georgia and the Safid Rud in Iran.

There is also a streamside rearing facility near Onaway, Michigan on the Black River, a tributary of the Cheboygan River, then Lake Huron.

The New Zealand longfin eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) is the largest and the only endemic freshwater eel species in New Zealand. (The others are the native Shortfin eel, Anguilla australis, also found in Australia, and the naturally introduced Australian Longfin eel Anguilla reinhardtii).

The Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) is a species of fish in the family Acipenseridae. It is found in the Caspian Sea and to a lesser extent the Black Sea and ascends certain rivers to spawn, mainly the Volga, Kura, Araks and Ural Rivers.

The Sakhalin sturgeon is commonly found in the areas of Northwest Pacific, Bering Sea, Tumnin or Datta river, northern Japan, and Korea. This species currently spawns persistently in the Tumnin River.

However, some are landlocked in the Columbia River Drainage, Montana, and Lake Shasta in California, with reported sightings in northern Baja California, Mexico.
