Types of Sheaths

Do you know the difference between LSF and LSHF cable? There is a worryingly common misconception that LSF cable (Low Smoke and Fume) and LSHF cable (Low smoke Halogen Free) are simply different names for the same thing.

Low smoke zero halogen or low smoke free of halogen (LSZH or LSOH or LS0H or LSFH or OHLS) is a material classification typically used for cable jacketing in the wire and cable industry. LSZH cable jacketing is composed of thermoplastic or thermoset compounds that emit limited smoke and no halogen when exposed to high sources of heat. The first commercial thermoplastic LSZH material for cable jacketing was invented by Richard Skipper in 1979 and patented by Raychem Corporation.

For this purpose, the surface of the needle is en- tirely coated with a polytetrafluoroethylene ( PTFE ) sheath (diameter/thickness, 2.3 mm/0.2 mm), which is an ideal bio-compatible material for medical application.

A PUR cable is a flexible, silicone- and halogen-free cable with PUR outer sheath polypropylene conductor insulation. It is oil and flame resistant and can be used in dragchain applications with minimal bend radius.

Thermoplastic-sheathed cable (TPS) consists of an outer toughened sheath of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (the thermoplastic element) covering one or more individual cables which are PVC insulated annealed copper conductors. It is a commonly used type of wiring for residential and light commercial construction in many countries.
