Types of Socialization

Anticipatory socialization is defined as accepting and incorporating the norms and values of a group that we anticipate joining in the future. Anticipatory socialization serves the purpose of providing a way for us to move into a group or role and easing the transition into the new group after we have become a member.

Primary socialization, also called initial socialization, is when a child learns to interact, behave and talk in society through family members. Secondary socialization occurs during the school years and adolescent years and happens through non-family influence.

The primary socialization received in childhood is just one part of the lifelong socialization process. Adults go through a process of resocialization, which is the learning of new norms and values that occurs when they join a new group or when life circumstances change dramatically.
