Form tool method This is one of the simplest methods to produce short taper. This method is shown in the above figure. To the required angle the form is grounded. The tool is fed perpendicular to the lathe axis, when the work piece rotates.
The method is applicable only to comparatively long tapers, but if the work is not too short and if the dead center is carefully set over very accurate results are obtainable. (2.) The important thing is to set the tailstock over the right distance.
Tapers can be either external or internal. If a workpiece is tapered on the outside, it has an external taper; if it is tapered on the inside, it has an internal taper. The method used for turning a taper depends on the degree, length, location of the taper (internal or external), and the number of pieces to be done.
