Yes it is “purposely” harder. Being in both the Army and Marines, (I didn't have to attend Army Basic Training because I had already attended Marine Boot Camp), the marines that come out of basic training have a much more developed skill set than soldiers coming out of basic training. read more

Prior to Vietnam, boot camp was only 12 weeks, but they shortened it to 8 weeks back then because of the necessity of supplying fresh troops to Vietnam so the training was probably more intense as a result. read more
