What do the blue dots on a roadway signify on Google maps?

Are you talking about a series of blue dots? I assume that's what you mean because a single blue dot just signifies your current location which you probably already know. A series of blue dots indicates you are traveling on foot. read more

If you are using public transportation, the walk you take from your starting location, to a train or bus stop, will be shown with blue dots. The publi transportation segment of the trip will be displayed as a solid line. If you have selected walking as your mode of transportation, your entire route will be displayed as a series of blue dots. read more
