Pallets are usually made of wood based on the item to be palletized; Hardwoods like local varieties of Oaks and Ash to softwoods like Pine and Basswood (speaking for the USA and Canada). Unless a custom shop is building the pallets, pallet makers do not do any extensive finishing on the wood, and you frequently find uneven boards and bark remaining on the finished pallet. read more
The two most common wood types used for making pallets are southern yellow pine (SYP) and oak. A former study done by the USDA and Virginia tech determined that SYP made up 18.9% of all woods used while oak made up 17.1% (by volume). read more
Wood species identification typically requires only a visual inspection. You could remove a piece and have it scientifically tested to reveal the species, but that would be costly and unnecessary. read more
