Gasoline from a given filling station might have been refined from any one of the fuel refiners in a region. A Shell station might have gasoline from a Valero or Phillips 66 refinery, and there may not even be a Shell refinery in a given area despite it being a Shell station. read more

There hasn't been a "need" for cars to get 35+ mpg here since for so long gas has been 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of gas and diesel elsewhere, such as Europe and Japan. Whether that gas is lesser-quality is a matter of debate. read more
