Free Jazz is not monolithic. Some free jazz sounds to me like 1950’s movie music and is very slow moving (early Bill Dixon) while other free music is invigorating (later John Coltrane). Some free jazz may be dissonant and yet, Ornette Coleman’s music has a great sense of melody - and jazz history. read more
