They're alive until shucked, which kills them immediately. Fun related fact, oysters sometimes have tiny crabs inside their shells once shucked. These little guys are called pea crabs and are not only edible as well, but considered by some to be quite the lucky little treat. read more
Oysters in the shell are alive. Live oysters have tightly closed shells and will sound like rocks when tapped together. Open shell oysters are dead and will sound like wind chimes when tapped together. Do not shuck or eat dead oysters. Raw oysters are shucked live.
