We carry a filter but never use it! We travel in Europe and North Africa and you can generally trust the water from campsite taps. For me, the best answer is to test the water if in any doubt. Filters are very slow at doing their work and I am too impatient! Gentian Violet crystals are the basic test material. It is generally quite easy to aquire. read more
Once you've used a filter in the field, it will inevitably be heavier than when you started out, since it is challenging to get all traces of water out of the filter. Unless you have all day to wait around for it to dry out, consider doing your best to dry it overnight to get all that extra water weight out. read more
