There is also no feature to pause a game in League of Legends, unless if he is playing a custom game. The only way he can leave a game is by becoming AFK. But that also exposes your son to the risk of getting reported by the other players and he may end up having his account banned. read more

They could make each team have 1 pause, duration 3 min. When someone request a pause, the team votes.. If majority of the team agree on the pause, the game will be paused and their 1 use is gone. read more

You can only pause in Custom Games using Tournament Draft mode using the /pause chat command. You can then unpause the game using /unpause or /resume.
