I don't think the French gave up Algeria, it was taken from them. Why did they give up on Algeria? Because it caused them more trouble than it was worth (money wise, blood wise, politically wise). read more
France certainly did not give up on Algeria. The Algerians revolted and gained their independence after a terrible and bloody war that lasted from 1954 to 1962. It is a shame that people that are neither French or Algerian are not taught this, as it was a terrible terrible war. read more
France could not allow to lose in another war because that could cause big political and military crisis in France. In Algeria, there were more French population (about 800,000) then in other overseas territories and colonies and their destiny would be very critical if they lost that war. read more
