I am a gymnast, and this is my answer: Gymnasts wear long-sleeved leotards (commonly called "leos" among gymnasts) for competition because it looks more professional and put-together. Just like horseback riders wear plain pants and jackets for lessons and top hats and suit jackets for competitions, or how figure skaters wear leggings and a shirt for practice, and glittery costumes for competitions. read more

Leotards can be short-sleeved or long-sleeved and cut at the groin area much like a bikini. If you don’t like this cut, you can opt for a singlet, a leotard that is cut in the shape of shorts at the bottom instead of a bikini.
