Why does glycolysis take place?

Best Answers

Glycolysis is the pathway of series of chemical conversions (involving mainly oxidation) of glucose to pyruvate. This is needed to maintain the blood glucose level and most importantly to obtain energy. The two substrate level phosphorylation reactions occurring in pathway generate two ATP.That means, one molecule of glucose generate 4 ATP in glycolysis out of which 2 are utilised in pathway itself. Also the oxidation reaction in pathway results in formation of reduced form NADH cofactor. read more

In addition, glycolysis results in two NADH molecules and 2 ATP molecules. The two pyruvate molecules move into a mitochondrian to be converted into acetyl. The rest of cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondrian. read more
